Fredendall was the US Commander of the Center Task Force of Operation Torch which landed at Oran. He had been chosen by EISENHOWER to lead the II Corps. The landing was well-planned and successfully executed on 8 November 1942. Fredendall then headed eastwards to join in the fight against the Axis forces in Tunisia. His troops were inexperienced and Fredendall was overconfident; he felt he could win an easy victory. He committed his forces to a diversionary offensive which eventually cost the Allies the Kasserine Pass. He was dismissed and replaced by General PATTON.
